Bereavement Leave Types
I. PAID BEREAVEMENT (as afforded by your collective bargaining agreement or memorandum of agreement, links below) Licensed/NWEA Collective Bargaining Agreement (see Article 8B - Paid Leaves) Classified/OSEA Collective Bargaining Agreement (see Article 13.2 - Paid Leaves of Absence) NW Outdoor Science School Memorandum of Agreement (see Article A) Confidential Staff (see Article 3G) Administrative Staff (see Article 3F) 1. Employees shall be granted up to five (5) paid days leave of absence per occurrence, non-accumulative, in the event of the death of a member’s immediate family. These 5 days do not have to be used consecutively, but must be used within 1 year of when you learned of your family member's passing. Immediate family members include: a. member's spouse/domestic partner (same or opposite sex) b. the member's or member's spouse's/domestic partner's parents c. child or grandchild of the member or member’s spouse/domestic partner d. grandparents of the member or member’s spouse/domestic partner e. brothers or sisters of the member or member’s spouse/domestic partner f. a person regularly residing in the member's residence Absences in AMS should be entered using the reason Bereavement: Provide name and relationship of deceased in Notes to the Administrator. II. OFLA BEREAVEMENT LEAVE 1. An employee may qualify for ten (10) days bereavement leave under Oregon Family Leave Act (OFLA). Eligibility determination is made by OFLA application. If an employee qualifies for bereavement leave under OFLA, the 10 days of leave will run concurrently to include the 5 paid leave days described above; accrued sick leave will be deducted for the five (5) days not covered under part 1 above. a. "Family member" is defined in statute as the employee’s: i. Spouse or same-gender domestic partner ii. Parent, Parent-in-law, or parent of employee’s same gender domestic partner iii. Child, step-child, or child of employee’s same-gender domestic partner iv. A person with whom the employee is or has been *in loco parentis to; or was previously in loco parentis of v. grandparent or grandchild of the employee b. The leave is limited to 10 days total per occurrence, and must be completed within 60 days of the date the employee learned of the death. Bereavement leave will count toward the total amount of OFLA eligible leave. Absences in AMS should be entered using OFLA Bereavement as the reason. |
