Paid Leave Oregon
Northwest Regional Education Service District has partnered with American Fidelity as its Paid Family and Medical Leave Insurance provider (Paid Leave Oregon Equivalent Plan). American Fidelity specializes in reviewing, processing and tracking leave requests. This means all NWRESD employees who wish to file a claim for this benefit are required go through American Fidelity and NOT the Oregon Employment Department.

- You will still need to enter your absences in Absence Management since the Paid Leave Oregon benefits are completely separate from your NWRESD salary and Absence Management system.
- Please continue to use the reason code that describes your current protected leave designation when entering your absences for this purpose. Once you have been approved by American Fidelity for Paid Leave Oregon benefits, you may choose whether or not to have your accrued paid leave deducted for your absences (sick leave, personal leave, then vacation if applicable). If not approved, or if you do not apply, board policy indicates accrued paid time off is to be applied to absences when on a protected leave.
- Any payment you receive from Paid Leave Oregon is outside/in addition to your accrued paid leave as an employee of NWRESD.

Service Credits for PERS
While it may seem counterintuitive to use accrued leave while out on protected leave, as long as your absences are covered by your accrued sick & personal leave (vacation leave too, if applicable) your work hours are reported to PERS as Service Credits.
If you were only to receive Paid Leave Oregon benefits, then your absences would be in effect "unpaid" in connection to your employment at NWRESD and the time you take off would not be reported as work hours to PERS (no Service Credit granted for the time off taken).
