Safety

How can I be prepared for an emergency at work?

We have developed a number of resources you can refer to in the event of an emergency. Every site has an Emergency Preparedness Manual. These red booklets include information about what to do in various types of emergencies.

How often are drills held?
Our school-based sites and service centers with early childhood programs hold fire drills once a month and earthquake and lockdown drills twice a year. Sites located in tsunami zones also hold tsunami drills twice a year.

Our service centers without early childhood programs have fewer drills since they are not required by law. However, we usually hold drills at these sites in order to prepare staff for an emergency. Centers without early childhood programs typically hold fire, earthquake and lockdown drills once a year.
Some sites are also conducting reunification and lock out drills. Read more about drill requirements >>

Please visit the Great Oregon Shakeout site for more information about how to prepare for earthquakes.

What types of cleaning materials are available at our sites?

Every cleaning product at our sites has been through a comprehensive industry-approved evaluation process. We select the least toxic options that also effectively kill pathogens.

Every product manufacturer is required to provide a document called a safety data sheet that lists potential hazards, what to do if it is ingested, etc. View the Safety Data Sheets for all of the products used in our buildings.

Please note: Cleaning supplies/chemicals not listed in the Safety Data Sheets folder at not allowed at our sites. Please do not bring cleaners from home. They will be removed and/or thrown away immediately. If you have specific concerns or need special accommodation for using any of these produces, please speak with your supervisor.

If you believe you have been injured by one of the products listed, please print out the Safety Data Sheet for that product and take it with you when you seek medical treatment.

Are there site-specific meetings about safety?

Yes. We have safety committees at each of our sites (including service centers, early childhood centers and school-based programs). Every safety committee meets once per month. If you'd like to join your site's safety committee, please speak with your supervisor. Get to know the safety committee members >>

All of the minutes and agendas from our safety meetings are available for staff to view.
